Book Blogger Hop 22-25/4

22 04 2011

Happy Easter everyone! As I’ve got a couple of days off, I thought I’d relax and join this week’s Hop. This week’s question comes from Christina who blogs at The Paperback Princesses.

”If you find a book you love, do you hunt down other books by the same author?”

Absolutely! I’ve read many great books this way – such as Michael Palin’s diaries. It makes my TBR lists even longer though! If I’ve enjoyed one book by an author and I find a second that looks interesting, I’ll read it.
Some of my favourite authors who I’ll buy sight unseen are: Penny Vincenzi, Michael Palin, Monica McInerney, Minette Walters, Ciara Geraghty and Richard Yates.

What about you?

Have a great weekend!

I haven’t done a hop for ages because I’ve been so busy, but this week’s question made me think. Looking forward to hopping  to your blog!

This week’s question comes from Jen B. who blogs at I Read Banned Books:

Do you ever wish you would have named your blog something different?

No, I had a hard enough time coming up with this name! It took ages and was the rate limiting factor. What I like about the name is that it turns into a tongue twister and you come out with ‘Stand Still Reading’ (well I do anyway) which is what the rest of the world does when I read!

Happy weekend!

An all new hop for the new year! I hope you’re enjoying 2011.

This week’s question is from Barb who blogs at Sugarbeat’s Books:

Why do you read the genre that you do?  What draws you to it?

I actually read quite a few different genres from historical fiction, modern fiction, mysteries/crimes, chick lit, travel memoirs, biographies, literature (classic and contemporary), books in translation…the list goes on. I can’t really pin myself to one genre for the rest of my life, I like to switch. For example, I’m reading Ken Follett’s Fall of Giants at the moment and Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, so the next books I read won’t by historical fiction or a classic!

What draws me to all these? I suppose it’s a need for variety and change. You can learn so much from books and I want to know it all!

Do you stick to a particular genre or do you hop around like me?

Have a good weekend!

Good morning Book Bloggers! Don’t things seem to get especially crazy in the weeks leading up to Christmas? Today I’m avoiding the shopping crowds (I”ll tackle them tomorrow) to answer this week’s Hop question from Angela at Library Girl Reads:

What is the thing you like most about reading book blogs?  Is it the reviews, author guest posts, articles, giveaways, or something else entirely?

I don’t think I could say there is one thing I like the most – that changes all the time! It depends what I’m seeking – I like reviews for recommendations, I like to read about authors that I’ve read and I’ve come across some great things serendipitously, such as Persephone books (more on that to come soon). I’ve never been lucky enough to win a giveaway (doesn’t stop me from trying though) but that’s not what attracts me to book blogs. I like the camaraderie and the enthusiasm for reading and books that’s shared between bloggers.

What do you enjoy about book blogs?

Have a lovely week all!

One week closer to Christmas? How is your gift selection going? Are the shops driving you mad?

This week’s question for the Hop comes from Marce at Tea Time With Marce:

“What very popular and hyped book in the blogosphere did you NOT enjoy and how did you feel about posting your review?”

I absolutely hated Twilight (before you run to look at my review, it’s not on this blog). I thought the writing was quite pedestrian and while the storyline was good, I think I’d have loved it much more when I was in high school and less cynical! I posted my review and waited for the backlash, but I didn’t attract any hate mail and got a couple of thumbs up from others! I think the book blogging community is very respectful of different tastes and responses to a book.

What book did you dislike- are you not a Stieg Larsson fan? Or do you prefer to stay away from bestsellers?

Have a great weekend!

Another week over- so busy! I’m currently beginning work on my research for my doctorate, so piles of journal articles and papers are piling up instead of books!

This week’s question is from  Sarah at Writer, Reader, Dreamer:

”What is your favourite book cover?”

I’ve got to admit that any book cover for me is a good book cover because it means I’m reading! eBooks unfortunately don’t cut it in the cover stakes- sometimes they’re boring, don’t work (all you get is a black screen) or are very unimaginative. I like sets that look alike such as:
F Scott Fitzgerald Penguin Classics- shiny and gorgeous!

The Popular Penguins series (they look so pretty lined up on the shelf and are very affordable)

What’s your favourite cover? Can you pick one?

Happy bookish week!

Hi Everyone! A bit late hopping this week due to mountains of work plus mountains of marking and a roam around looking for all those Christmas new releases! I hope everyone enjoyed last week’s hop- I am now reading more blogs because of this! I also found through following Dolce Bellezza, The Blue Bookcase, which looks great (am I literary enough though? I wonder if I’m game to tackle War and Peace…maybe later!)

This week’s Hop question comes from The Paperback Princesses, who ask Hoppers:

If you find a book that looks interesting but is part of a series, do you always start with the first title?

I am very definite on this -YES. I feel cheated if I realise part of the way through a book that I’m on the second (or more) of a series. I think this should be prominently displayed on the back cover or on the first page to explain this! Sometimes it’s not made very clear. I will always go to the first book and make my way sequentially. This is what I did with the Morland Dynasty series- and they are very difficult to find in bookstores across Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Singapore! (Yes, I did search in all those countries).

Yay, the end of another week- what are your bookish plans this weekend? Me, I am working part of the weekend, but still hope to put a big dent in my current reads.

This week’s question is from Vicki of The Wolf’s Den:

What are your feelings on losing followers? Have you ever stopped following a blog?

Losing followers is part of life- I know some people like to follow in different ways (eg. RSS feed, email subscription, Google). Tastes change over time- you might have thought I had great taste in books three months ago, but now you don’t like what I’m reading. So you stop following. It’s not something I worry about too much (because I love to read comments, reply and find new bloggers to follow that way), but I record reviews primarily for me and my family/friends.  We’re all busy and have lots of things to do in our lives!

I have stopped following blogs before- for example, I might follow one about a particular city/country before I holiday, but the information might not be required after the event. I float in and out of some reading blogs- like I said previously, tastes change!

Hi Hoppers! Hope you’re having an interesting reading week. Me, I’m excited about Daiso and Zara finally opening in Australia (even though I live nowhere near the stores, at least I no longer need a passport to get to one).

Today’s question is an excellent one:

What is the one bookish thing you would love to have, no matter the cost?

I’d love to have access to any book I wanted any time. You might say that’s possible with ereaders and the internet, but I’m still finding that the ereader stores and stock are still a bit limited in Australia. Internet ordering is still at least four to five days from computer to doorstep. Maybe I should just open a massive Kinokuniya next door to my house and everyone could share the bookish love…

The Book Blogger Hop is kindly hosted by Jennifer at Crazy-For-Books.com- it’s a fun way to relax into the weekend with all things bookish!

Finally the weekend- I hope you’ve got some relaxing reads planned. Me, I plan to finish the books I’m currently reading and have a great time picking some new ones. This week’s Hop question comes from Suko:

What’s your favorite beverage while reading or blogging, if any? Is it tea, coffee, water, a glass of wine, or something else?

As a rule, I don’t generally drink while blogging (although it may appear that way!) I don’t like drinks too close to the computer. Likewise, I won’t drink while I read if I’m not sitting at a table. If all the crteria fit, then it’s usually tea (many varieties- fruit, black, chai) or hot chocolate.

The Book Blogger Hop is hosted each week by Crazy-for-Books.com. Happy hopping!
