Teaser Tuesday 9/11/10

9 11 2010

Happy Tuesday to everyone! We’re 40% through the working week already!

My teaser this week comes from Luxe by Anna Godbersen- it’s probably more of a YA read, but this series appealed to me when I heard it described as the ‘Gossip Girl of the 1800′s’- what’s not to like about that? The teaser is from page 19:

“Well, what are you thinking about, then?” Percival frowned and pressed his hand into her lower back. Elizabeth couldn’t think of anyone she would trust less to move her backward across a floor of exuberant, slightly tipsy people.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My Teaser this week comes from Minding Frankie, by Maeve Binchy:

‘Please sit down, Emily,’  Noel begged and he told the whole story, haltingly and with a lot of repetition. Mainly he said that he could not have fathered  a child without remembering it.’ (page 43)

Have a good week and keep reading- I’m spotting a lot of ereaders out and about this week!

Teaser Tuesday 12/10/10

12 10 2010

Happy Tuesday, I hope you’re having a good or better day! Another busy day, my teaser for this week comes from Trust Me, I’m a Junior Doctor by Max Pemberton- a UK doctor’s diary on the first year as a doctor. It’s funny, witty and sad at the same time.

“So, what branch of medicine are you planning on going into?” asked, Dr Pike, my consultant. I’ve learned by now that if you want to get on with consultants, when asked this question, you must always say whatever speciality they work in. (page 160)

Those of you who work in healthcare might find the above statement amusing. If you’re not familiar with doctor ‘ranks’, consultant is the specialist or boss. Pays to be nice!

Teaser Tuesday 5/10/10

5 10 2010

Another Tuesday again! I hope you’re having a good day- all I’ve been wanting to do this week is sit down and read as I’ve got two very good books on the go (Diaries: The Python Years by Michael Palin and Barbed Wire and Roses by Peter Yeldham).

My teaser this week comes from Barbed Wire and Roses, about an Aussie soldier who dies in World War I and the story is then picked up in the future by his grandson- was his grandfather lost in the war or did something else happen?

‘The shrill whistles that signalled the attack came ten minutes later. When they climbed from the trenches and cut the wire to cross no-man’s-land without sign of return fire it felt like a reprieve, but most knew this meant there’d be gas. ‘ (page 58-9)

Teaser Tuesday 28/9/10

28 09 2010

Another Tuesday, another teaser! I’m reading something a bit lighter this week – Homecoming by Cathy Kelly (still going on the Michael Palin though…it’s a hefty book!). A light Irish fiction, it centres around four women who live near each other. (You can’t probably tell I’m not very far into this!)

This teaser is from page 29:

‘ Prudence’s smile faltered at this. She was entirely unaccustomed to people receiving  her carefully aimed gossip with politeness. Normally, the recipient would look stunned or hurt or on the verge of needing a restraining order.’

Thanks for visiting – I do appreciate it!

Teaser Tuesday and a tantrum

7 09 2010

First thing today is Teaser Tuesday:

This week’s teaser comes from The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami, p 23:

“Noboru Wataya, /Where are you? / Did the wind-up bird /Forget to wind your spring?”

OK, so it’s technically a poem- but Noboru is both a man and a cat, so I think he’s forgiven :)

  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

I know you might be thinking that tantrums don’t usually go with Teaser Tuesday, so I’ll get my whinge over and done with now, so please feel free not to read!

Today I received my first ‘nasty’ blog comments (although not from any bloggers that I recognise). Why can’t we all play nicely? I don’t profess to be a perfect book blogger- certainly my reviews are far from high literature and I try not to give too much away plot-wise because I’d like you to share in the joy I had from the particular book- but I don’t deserve to be belittled either. May I suggest if you’re here to get information for an essay or report, it would just be a lot easier to read the book, the way everyone else did before the internet!

Rant over, resume normal transmission and have a great week!

Teaser Tuesday 10/8/10

10 08 2010

Finally, a Tuesday I’m home early enough to post! This week’s teaser comes from The Chocolate Run  by Dorothy Koomson (courtesy of a 3 for 2 at Borders), which I’m finding pleasant but a bit boring as there’s no subplots so far. Just about Amber, her hookups with her friend Greg and friends Jen and Matt moving in together.

“She didn’t count because she was insane, she thought I was going to marry her after two days  and I learnt my lesson in a big way. That’s it.” I hitched up my other, incredulous and disbelieving eyebrow. (page 60)

Teaser Tuesday 6/7/10

6 07 2010

Wow! How time flies when you’re having fun or working, working, working. (Way too much overtime today!) I’ve finally finished Brick Lane (review coming soon) and was in the mood for something not too taxing. Enter Becoming Scarlett  by Ciara Geraghty.  (I read Saving Grace earlier this year and found it good chick-lit with substance).  Today’s teaser comes from page 23, and I’m going to cheat, so please don’t count the sentences!

‘ In the end I take all the tests. Even the one made in Kazakhstan with the warning in the smallest small print I’ve ever seen: Results may be compromised if test is taken on day 7, 18 and 21 of your menstrual cycle. I take the test. It is the last one. It is positive.’

Happy reading!

Teaser Tuesday 29/6/10

29 06 2010

I really enjoyed my Teaser Tuesday last week, so I’m back again for more. This week’s teaser comes to you from Brick Lane by Monica Ali:

p228:

‘Those bloody health inspectors,’ Razia said. ‘Closed the bloody factory down.’

Once again, I don’t know anything about the factory or health inspectors (or who Razia is), but I’m sure I will by the time I write my review!

Teaser Tuesday 22/6/10

22 06 2010

My first Teaser Tuesday comes from The Help by Kathryn Stockett (great book so far by the way). No long post today because I’m so tired in my new position at work (lots of running and overtime)- sorry, I’m sure I’ll adapt soon!

Page 88:

I look in their smiling faces, at their hope for me. It’s not like Mother’s meddling, but a clean hope without strings or hurt.

Not sure what this is about because I haven’t read this yet. But I’ll let you know soon!
