Secret Confessions: Sydney Housewives – Virginia by Rhian Cahill

In brief: The first in a new series of sexy short stories about a group of Sydney women and their love lives.

The good: Certainly no delay in getting to the action, and combines sexy with a sweet ending.

The not-so-good: Easily read in one sitting.

Why I chose it: Loved the cover and the idea of the series (currently 11 novellas). Thanks to Escape Publishing for the eARC.

My rating: 8.5 out of 10

Even though I don’t watch any of the Real Housewives series on television, I love to read about the secret lives of the rich and privileged. What better way to indulge in this with the start of a new, sexy book series, Secret Confessions: Sydney Housewives? This is a new e-novella/short story collection focusing on a group of Australian women who live the high life in the beautiful city of Sydney. But behind the glamour of designer handbags and perfect mansions, each woman is lacking a certain something…

The first story is about Virginia, an ice queen by day who prowls less than salubrious bars by night, looking for sex. Hot, no holds barred sex that’s quick and anonymous. None of her friends know this. Just like how none of them know what happened to her marriage…When Virginia enters her favourite bar one night looking for a handsome stranger, she finds Carter, an employee waiting for her. Sure he’s not anonymous, but one night won’t hurt, will it?

As this is a short story, the pace is brisk and the protagonists get down and dirty very quickly. Given what we know of Virginia, this doesn’t seem out of place. Kudos to Cahill for creating a strong background for Virginia in a short story. Likewise, when Virginia realises that Carter could be more than a quick fling, it’s sensitively dealt with and fits in with their characters. My only criticism of the book would be that it’s too short (an easy commute read, but be warned this is not the type of story for others to read over your shoulder, so be careful if your bus/train contains these nosy types!) but it does give the reader a lovely happily ever after. It also sets up further novellas in the series as we get to meet some of Virginia’s friends, who clearly have their own secrets.

If you’re after a short, sexy read, I highly recommend Secret Confessions: Sydney Housewives. It’s intriguing and pure pleasure!
