Mailbox Monday and What I’m Reading: 19/6/17

The last week was a great one for books. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for my nose as I spent most of it with a head cold! There’s nothing worse than sniffing and sneezing, so I spent most of it sleeping, reading and reading social media. Hopefully now I’m on the mend! Here’s what arrived in the winter sunshine:

Secrets of the Springs by Kerry McGinnis (out 17^th July) arrived from Penguin Random House. It’s set in rural Australia where Orla returns to see her dying uncle. Mysteries abound regarding secrets of her parents and a murder, but will Orla find her dream?

The Woman in the Wood by Lesley Pearse (released 3^rd July) was also from Penguin Random House. It’s about twins sent to live at their grandmother’s house in the 1960s. Things are quite happy until one of the twins goes missing and bodies are found nearby. It’s up to the other twin Mary to investigate the woman in the wood…

Forgotten by Nicole Trope was from Allen & Unwin (released 28^th June, RRP $29.99). In one day, one small mistake will change a number of lives. A trip for milk for Malia leads to the disappearance of Zach, and the detective looking after the case has a closely linked history. Edna too is worried about the new people in the boarding house and someone else wants what she can’t have… Running against the clock, can things be made right?

Hello, Goodbye by Emily Brewin (also out 28^th June, RRP $29.99) came from Allen & Unwin too. Teenager Mary feels like she’s alone in the world – parents fighting and boyfriend Sam now in Melbourne. But on visiting Sam, she’s introduced to a number of new ideas and people – liberal and against the war in Vietnam. Things start to look up for Mary, but then something life changing happens…

Half Wild by Pip Smith was a prize from Allen & Unwin. Out July, this is a fiction novel inspired by the life of Eugenia Falleni (whom I’ve read a non-fiction book about – you can read my review here). It’s about Jean…or Tally and life cloaked in secrets. Jean has been hit by a car and her memory starts to wander… life in Wellington growth up…a body found on the river banks…a man with a secret.

The Duchess by Danielle Steel arrived from Pan Macmillan (released 27^th June). I’m looking forward to this story of Angelique, who when orphaned is turned out of her estate by her stepbrothers. She flees to Paris with an envelope full of money and becomes a businesswoman, all while keeping her identity secret. But can she ever be free?
