Mailbox Monday and What I’m Reading: 28/8/17

What a week! An excellent one for the letterbox in addition to the first signs of spring. I really can’t decide which book to read next! (Might have to have a few on the go).

The History of Bees by Maja Lunde (available 1st September) arrived from Simon & Schuster. Translated from the Norwegian by Diane Oatley, it’s set across three time periods (1851, 2007 and 2098) and continents. It’s about bees (of course), but the bond between families and our relationships with nature.

After I’ve Gone by Linda Green was from Hachette (as were all the others, except The Force). It’s a psychological thriller that starts when Jess opens Facebook to find it 18 months into the future – and she’s dead. Is this true or a prank? Can Jess save her future at the expense of her not yet conceived son?

Nineteen Letters by Jodi Perry (released tomorrow) is about a love from childhood that turns to tragedy when Jemma is in an accident 19 days after the wedding. When she wakes, she has no memory of Braxton or their life together. So he starts writing her letters…

Young Jane Young by Gabrielle Zevin (also released tomorrow) is about Aviva’s affair with a political figure and the public fallout that occurs after. So she decides to become Jane Young and move to a small town. But when she runs for public office, the internet digs up her past life.

To Siri, with Love by Judith Newman (available tomorrow) comes from one of my favourite writers for Allure magazine. Judith’s son Gus is autistic and finds an unlikely friendship with Siri (yes, that Siri). Siri is patient with Gus’ questions, ensures he speaks clearly and teaches him manners.

The Force by Don Winslow was a prize from Dymocks. It’s one of their favourite books from 2017, set in an elite special unit of police. Malone has tried to be a good cop, but he’s not clean (and nor is anyone else). Now trapped by the Feds, he needs to walk a fine line between his colleagues, job and lovers while the city rages around them.

Another Woman’s Husband by Gill Paul (also released tomorrow) is set in in two time periods, 1911 and 1997, linked by the British monarchy. Mary is a good friend of Wallis Simpson and Rachel’s car was behind Diana’s in Paris. What do Wallis and Diana have in common and will Rachel reveal the link?

Secrets Between Friends by Fiona Palmer (released September 12th) is about three friends Abbie, Ricki and Jess. Each has their own worries and missed opportunities and on a cruise to celebrate their 10 year reunion some of those secrets start to catch up with them…

Terra Nullius by Claire G. Coleman (available Tuesday) is her debut novel. Claire is a local writer, identifying with the South Coast Noongar people. It’s a story of colonialism with The Settlers wanting peace on their terms. The Natives are restless in an Australia that is not the same as they know it.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng (released September 12th) is set in a planned suburb where everyone has their lives carefully planned. When Mia and Pearl arrive in the neighbourhood, rules are discarded and planning is a thing of the past. But what is Mia hiding and how will a custody battle affect them all?
