Last week…where did it go? Spring has sprung, so a lot of time was spent outdoors soaking up the sun. I also planted a couple of vegetables ready for salads and as usual, played far too much Magikarp Jump (best game for the treadmill). This week I hope to get some more reading done, as well as some study I’ve kind of been putting off because the textbook is so boring…
The books I received in the mail were anything but boring – they are all so different!
I am really, really looking forward to Minette Walters’ The Last Hours (out 27th September, RRP $32.99 AUD) which arrived from Allen & Unwin (as did the next two books). It’s set in the time of the Black Death, where Lady Anne of Develish is determined to protect her people. She locks the gates and lets nobody in…but what happens when tempers fray and food runs low? What will the people of Develish find on the other side of the moat?
Michelle de Kretser is another author I really enjoy. Her new novel The Life to Come (released 2nd October, RRP $32.99 AUD) follows Pippa, Celeste and Ash. Pippa wants success, Celeste is worried about her relationship and Ash is trying to block out childhood memories. It’s about the stories we tell and those we don’t from the individual through to society.
Such Small Hands by Andres Barba (translated by Lisa Dillman, available now, RRP $24.99 AUD) is a slim but intriguing novella about Marina. Marina isn’t like other little girls, but still plays their childhood games. But when Marina the doll gets involved, things change at the orphanage… This might not be one to read at night!
The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn was a win from Harper Collins and Goodreads. This looks to be the first thriller of 2018 as Anna watches her perfect neighbours day and night. But one day, something goes wrong and Anna sees something she shouldn’t. Can she find out the truth without leaving the house?
