Mailbox Monday and What I’m Reading: 25/6/18

Another Monday rolls around! I’ve only just noticed that both the books I read last week had ‘blue’ in the title. Both very interesting and set in the lovely warmth of summer. Here’s three new books that came home with me recently:

The Desert Nurse by Pamela Hart came from Hachette. I’ll be posting my review of this book on July 16th. I’ve really loved Pamela’s other Australian historical fiction books, so I’m sure this will be no exception. The Desert Nurse is set in World War I, as Evelyn enlists as an army nurse despite her family’s misgivings. In Egypt, Evelyn falls for a doctor with a disability who believes himself unworthy of the love of others. Can Evelyn change his mind in the midst of chaos?

I’ve been waiting for The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai for months, so I grabbed it as soon as it was available. It’s split across 1985 as the AIDS crisis takes hold in Chicago amongst Yale and his friends and also 2015 as the sister of a friend of Yale’s searches for her daughter in Paris. There, Fiona realises that the crisis isn’t over, but continues to ripple across lives.

I saw White Fur by Jardine Libaire on the internet ages ago and thought it was a book I would like. The story is about an unlikely couple, Elise and Jamey. They are both very different and as they get to know each other, they decide on a new life together. But Jamey’s wealthy family won’t let him get away easily…

  1. All of your books for this week look interesting. I will look forward to your opinion of Burning Fields.

  2. The Great Believers was so good I think it will end up on my Top Ten list for this year. I hope you enjoy it as much. I also really liked White Fur. It looks like you have some wonderful books coming up. Have a great week!

  3. I’ve enjoyed Pamela Hart too, her war books always sound authentic. I love the cover on this one – reminds me of Nicole Kidman! I’ll look out for this one at our library.
