Last week was cold and/or rainy so it was a good week for huddling under a blanket and reading! Naturally today when I sit down to the computer it’s sunny and warm so this will be short…let’s look at the books that arrived recently:
2028 by Ken Saunders (released September) was a prize from Allen & Unwin. It is set in the political world of Australia in 2028 as PM Fitzwilliams reckons he has it all under control. Except there is now an actual opposition. Welcome to a future Australia where you can gamble as you pay the parking meter and ASIO is a joke.
Make or Break by Catherine Bennetto arrived from Simon & Schuster. It’s about Jess who is whisked away to Cape Town by her boyfriend (hopefully soon to be fiancé). But the holiday isn’t what she expected and nor is home when she returns… I’ve just started this and it’s really funny.
How to be Perfect by Holly Wainwright was from Allen & Unwin (released September, RRP $29.99 AUD) and is set in a world full of green smoothies and fake influencers. Elle is running an exclusive retreat that costs thousands, but who is bankrolling it and where are her kids? Frances knows things will be perfect if she can get to Elle’s retreat and become an Instagram worthy mum. Meanwhile, Abi’s life should be revolving around her wedding. But her daughter’s You Tube channel is attracting the wrong kind of followers and her ex-husband is starting a financial cult – in his shed.
The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton also arrived from Allen & Unwin (released September, RRP $32.99 AUD). The narrative is split between 1862 and current day. Edward Radcliffe arrives at Birchwood Manor in the Victoria era for a month of art and creativity. But it all goes horribly wrong and ruins in life. In the present day, Elodie wonders why Birchwood Manor seems so familiar and who is the woman in the photograph? Could the clockmaker’s daughter hold the key to the secrets?
