Mailbox Monday and What I’m Reading: 8/10/18

Spring has arrived! The flowers are in bloom and so is the sneezing. That gives me plenty of reasons to stay inside and read when I can. The new releases are coming thick and fast, thank you to those who sent these lovely reads. This week appears to be blue themed:

Melmoth by Sarah Perry (available 10^th October, RRP $29.99 AUD) arrived from Allen & Unwin. Helen did something very wrong once and she can’t forgive herself. Now, she finds herself in the possession of a manuscript about the Melmoth, said to be the loneliest being in the world. Melmoth tries to entice those who have done something dreadful to walk with her, or accept their past. Helen can’t stop reading – or feeling that something is watching her…

The Turn of Midnight by Minette Walters (available 24^th October, RRP $32.99 AUD) was also from Allen & Unwin. I’m going to see Minette next month when she tours Australia, so this will tide me over until then! This book is the conclusion to The Last Hours (which I loved) and follows the people of Develish after the Black Death has decimated England. They know they have to leave the estate to survive, and Thaddeus’s team of serfs set about finding freedom. But in England of 1349, that can’t always be done lawfully and the people must fight for their independence.

I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green, so it was lovely to open up the package from Hachette and find it inside! When April finds a giant Transformer-like sculpture in New York and videos it, little does she know that she’s about to go viral. These Carls as they are called have suddenly appeared across the world – but what do they mean (and want)? April’s new fame has the world looking at her for answers but it’s not easy being insta-famous.

Arcadia by Di Morrissey (arriving 16^th October) is set in Tasmania across the 1930s and modern day. Stella arrives at her new husband’s property, Arcadia, and falls in love with the ancient forest. But when she’s struck by a predator, she’s saved by someone unusual. Later on, Stella’s granddaughter and friend discover Stella’s secret life on a road trip. Now it looks like they are being threatened. Thank you to Pan Macmillan for the lovely hardcover.
