Last day and mailbox for this year! I hope you had a good bookish 2018 and are looking forward to what 2019 brings. (So many of the releases sound fantastic).
Here are the books I received for Christmas (all chosen by me):
XX by Angela Chadwick is fiction, exploring the what if it were possible for two women to have a baby? Jules and Rosie are one of the first couples to do so but when their details are leaked to the media, everything becomes that much more difficult. I’m reading this now and really enjoying it.
America Is Not the Heart by Elaine Castillo focuses on Hero, now living in America after being disowned by her parents in the Philippines. Some of her new family choose not to ask, but her cousin wants to know the truth behind Hero’s previous lives.
The Uncollected Plays of Shaun Micallef (signed!) is a book I’ve really, really been looking forward to. Shaun Micallef is the best satirist, absurdist and surrealist ever.
Time to Fly (words by Michael Ellis & Russell Jackson) is a pictorial story of the West Coast Eagles’ road to the 2018 AFL premiership. It’s going to be fun looking back on a dramatic and great season.
Fresh Complaint by Jeffrey Eugenides is a collection of short stories of characters in the middle of emergencies, personal or national.
The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyle is about Cyril, born to a teenage mum and adopted. His new parents treat him like a curiosity but it’s Julian Woodbead who seems to be chasing a more glamorous life. Can Cyril find his own happiness?
The Collected Stories by Grace Paley is another of the gorgeous Virago Modern Classics. The stories in this volume contain personal and political truths for the characters.
If you want to look at other books received this week across the globe, drop by the Mailbox Monday blog for links to everyone’s mailbox goodies.
