Happy new year! I hope 2019 is an excellent reading year for us all.
I bought five new books this week, inspired by long days and summer:
Where the River Runs by Fleur McDonald had an excellent quote on the back cover, so I just had to buy it. It’s about Chelsea, who returns to her home town after ten years in exile. She makes an uneasy truce with her father but when a shocking discovery is made, secrets of the past about the family must be revealed.
The Binding by Bridget Collins sounds a like magical bookish story. Emmett is summonsed from his field work to begin an apprenticeship to a bookbinder but it’s not quite what you’d expect. In each book bound, a memory is captured. That means you can forget a secret forever, leaving it in the vault under the workshop. But what happens when Emmett finds a book with his own name on it?
Two Kinds of Truth by Michael Connelly is a Harry Bosch novel but this time Bosch is a volunteer on cold cases for the San Fernando police. But Harry is called to the murder of a pharmacist that has ties to something much larger just as a prisoner from Harry’s past claims he was framed. The LAPD aren’t willing to cooperate, so Harry needs to find the truth on his own.
The Passengers by Eleanor Limprecht opens with Sarah and her grandmother Hannah cruising from California to Australia. Hannah hasn’t been back to Australia since she left as a war bride. As the ship sails, Hannah opens up about her past to Sarah and what she gave up.
Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver has two characters who resist the ideas of the masses across two time periods. In 1871, Thatcher wants to teach his school students about Charles Darwin’s work. But in small town Vineland, that isn’t welcome. In the current time, Willa stands against the world as her house, job and family crumble around her. As the world shifts around both characters, can they find shelter?
