For me, it was a peaceful week. For Australia, it was anything but as bushfires continue in much of the country. It seems a little weird to talk about books, but I did buy a few:
Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou is non-fiction, about a Silicon Valley biotech startup called Theranos. It just happened to be home to major corporate fraud…
Ponti by Sharlene Teo is set in Singapore. Szu and Circe are good friends growing up, but now they’ve drifted apart. Now Circe is offered the chance to remake the horror film series that starred her cruel mother and the memories come flooding back…
Love and Ruin by Paula McLain is about Martha Gellhorn, a journalist covering the Spanish Civil War. Here she meets and falls in love with Ernest Hemingway. They are both rising stars, but when For Whom the Bell Tolls is published they are no longer equal. Martha must forge her own path.
Supper Club by Lara Williams is about a secret society for hungry women. Each participant attends for her own reasons and these women grow over the months. They bring rage, hunger and loneliness – and offer a smattering of hope.
