Mailbox Monday and What I’m Reading: 3/1/22

Happy New Year! It’s a bit late but here are the books that were in my Christmas collection:

Pandemics: What Everyone Needs to Know by Peter Doherty was written several years ago, and ‘was mainly right’ according to the author. It discusses infection, immunity and pandemics before the current COVID-19 one.

Yours Cheerfully by A.J. Pearceis the second book about aspiring journalist Emmeline Lake in World War II London. This time Emmy is helping to encourage women to take up war work by writing about it, but finds the reality is often difficult to manage. Will she stand by her friends or toe the government line?

Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whiteheadis about Ray, a furniture salesman who gets caught up in a robbery as the fence. Now his business includes a lot of new clientele. Is there any way he can maintain his reputation, save his cousin, live and collect his share?

Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefeis about the Sackler family, who own Purdue Pharma, makers of OxyContin. It’s about drama, philanthropy, money and power entwined with the drug that was heavily involved in the opioid crisis.

Crossroads by Jonathan Franzen is set in 1970s Chicago. The Hildebrandt family are each seeking freedom – from marriage to morals and culture. But what each person does will complicate the lives of other members of the family…

The Premonition by Michael Lewis is about the COVID-19 virus and the people who anticipated it, traced and tracked it.

The Hard Crowd by Rachel Kushner is a collection of her essays ranging in topics from classic cars (note the Ford Galaxie on the cover) to art and literature.

The Couple by Helly Acton finds Millie more than happy with her single life. When she lands a new project to launch a pill that prevents love, it sounds perfect. Until she meets Ben…

The Five Wounds by Kirstin Valdez Quade is set in New Mexico just as Holy Week is about to start. Amadeo is preparing to play Jesus in the procession when his 15-year-old pregnant daughter appears on his doorstep. Five generations of the family come together to try to parent each other.

  1. Happy New Year!

You have some great books in your Christmas collection. I’ve had my eye on HARLEM SHUFFLE for a while, but just haven’t gotten to it yet.

  2. ‘Harlem Shuffle’ is still on my TBR as well! ‘The Hard Crowd’ is really grabbing my attention as well though, I do enjoy essay collections, so I’ll have to check it out! I hope you have a lovely weekend and a Happy New Year 🙂
